Classification societies (DNV, LR, ABS, BV, ClassNK, Türk Loydu and peers) care about automation per its role: systems serving essential services (propulsion, steering, power management, safety shutdowns) face the strictest scrutiny; monitoring and non-essential comfort systems face proportionally less. Two acceptance routes dominate: type-approved components (products carrying the society’s certificates — many marine-line PLCs, sensors and panels do) assembled per rules, or case-by-case approval of specific designs with the society’s plan-approval office. The pragmatic strategy: type-approved hardware wherever the market offers it, engineering effort spent on the system-level documentation instead.
The documentation package is the project: system descriptions, cause-and-effect matrices, power supply and segregation philosophy, environmental compliance evidence (the marine environmental testing categories behind those type approvals), FMEA-style failure discussions for the essential tier, and test protocols the surveyor will witness. Survey day choreography: everything on the protocol demonstrated live — alarm by alarm, failure injection included — with deviations recorded and closed formally.
Timing rule of thumb: plan-approval dialogue opened at design start, not at installation; society feedback loops run weeks, and drydock windows do not wait for correspondence.
