SINAMICS F30001 Overcurrent: The Checklist Before You Blame the Drive

F30001 says one thing only: phase current exceeded the hardware limit fast. The drive is almost always the messenger, not the culprit.

Work the list in order

  1. When does it trip? At the start pulse: suspect a short or hard mechanical block. During acceleration: ramp too steep for the load, or torque limits mis-set. At speed, sporadically: insulation breaking down under PWM stress, or load shocks.
  2. Megger the motor and cable (disconnected from the drive!). Phase-to-phase and phase-to-earth. PWM edges find weaknesses that 50 Hz never did — a motor that “ran fine on the old drive” can still be the fault.
  3. Turn the machine by hand. Seized bearings, a crashed axis, a foreign object in the pump — mechanics cause a big share of “drive faults”.
  4. Check the obvious parameter sins: motor data mismatch, missing identification run, current controller gains from a different motor, output filter declared but absent (or vice versa).
  5. Only then suspect the power unit. A shorted IGBT usually also announces itself at the first enable regardless of motor connected — the classic test: fault present with motor cable removed points inside.

The context questions that solve cases

New installation or was it running for years? Anything changed — motor swap, longer cable, new coupling? Does it follow temperature or shifts? Overcurrent stories are biographies; read them.

Can I just raise the current limit? The hardware threshold, no — and you should not want to. Parameter current limits protect the motor; F30001 protects the silicon.

After a genuine IGBT failure, what else must I check? Why it failed: cooling, chronic overload, DC-bus events, or the motor insulation that killed it — otherwise the spare dies the same death.
