The three views that matter
Devices & networks, online. Green/orange/red overview of every device. Orange (maintenance required/demanded) is the early-warning tier: typically fiber attenuation, a port running at reduced link speed, or a device complaining internally. Investigate orange; do not wait for red.
Port statistics. Per-port dropped frames and CRC errors identify the cable segment that is dying — vibration-fatigued patch cords and connectors near welders top the statistics. A port whose error counter climbs daily is a scheduled repair; the same port at zero after replacement is your proof.
Topology comparison. Configured-vs-actual topology finds the “temporary” rewiring nobody documented, and it is the prerequisite for automatic device replacement working when you need it.
Make it routine
We put a network health check into every maintenance visit: five minutes online, screenshot the device list, note any counters that moved. Trending beats heroics — the plants that never have Profinet emergencies are the ones reading the maintenance tier monthly.
